  1. Native to or inhabitant of Myanmar (formerly
  2. Burma), a state with over 20 ethnic groups,
  3. all of whom have the right to Burmese
  4. nationality. The largest group are the
  5. Burmans, speakers of a Sino-Tibetan language,
  6. who migrated from the hills E of Tibet,
  7. settling in the area around Mandalay by the
  8. 11th century AD. From the Mons, speakers of a
  9. Mon-Khmer language, the Burmans acquired
  10. Hinyana Buddhism and a written script based
  11. on Indian syllables. The Burmans are mainly
  12. settled in the valleys where they cultivate
  13. rice in irrigated fields. The highland people
  14. often use shifting cultivation methods and,
  15. although there are many minorities, the major
  16. groupings are Karen, Kachin, Chin, Naga,
  17. Palaung, and Wa.
