Native to or inhabitant of Myanmar (formerly
Burma), a state with over 20 ethnic groups,
all of whom have the right to Burmese
nationality. The largest group are the
Burmans, speakers of a Sino-Tibetan language,
who migrated from the hills E of Tibet,
settling in the area around Mandalay by the
11th century AD. From the Mons, speakers of a
Mon-Khmer language, the Burmans acquired
Hinyana Buddhism and a written script based
on Indian syllables. The Burmans are mainly
settled in the valleys where they cultivate
rice in irrigated fields. The highland people
often use shifting cultivation methods and,
although there are many minorities, the major
groupings are Karen, Kachin, Chin, Naga,
Palaung, and Wa.
